How it works

Holistic or biological dentists perform the same restorative work as any dentist, but select materials for biocompatibility and favour techniques that conserve natural tooth structure. Metal restorations are avoided in favour of ceramic and zirconia; decay is often removed with a water laser rather than a drill; ozone and low-level laser are used to reduce bacterial load and support healing. Where old amalgam fillings are removed, a strict isolation and filtration protocol is used to limit mercury vapour exposure.

What makes it different

A holistic dentist — also called a biological dentist — treats the mouth as part of the whole body rather than as a separate system. The clinical work is ordinary dentistry: fillings, crowns, implants, cleanings, extractions. What changes is the choice of materials, the tools used to do the work, and the attention paid to how both interact with the rest of your health.

Two principles run through the whole discipline. First, materials should be chosen for biocompatibility, which in practice usually means metal-free. Second, treatment should preserve as much natural tooth and healthy tissue as possible.

How treatment differs in practice

Materials

  • Metal-free dentistry — avoids mercury amalgam, nickel crowns and titanium implants, on the basis that these can contribute to chemical exposure or immune reactions in susceptible patients.
  • Biocompatible ceramic restorations — tooth-coloured ceramic, porcelain or zirconia for fillings, crowns and implants in place of metal.
  • Fluoride alternatives — minerals such as hydroxyapatite offered as an option for strengthening enamel without fluoride.
  • Biocompatibility testing — blood or saliva testing before treatment to check how you are likely to react to specific dental materials.

Tools

  • Laser instead of the drill — water lasers remove decay quietly, without the vibration and friction of a mechanical drill. Because they generate little heat, treatment can often be done with less anaesthetic, and more healthy tooth structure is left intact.
  • Airflow cleaning — replaces metal scaling instruments with a stream of pressurised air, warm water and fine mineral powder to lift soft plaque and staining, which is gentler on gum tissue.

Therapies

  • Ozone therapy — therapeutic ozone applied to gums or teeth to reduce bacterial load, address infection and support healing.
  • Cold laser therapy (photobiomodulation) — low-level laser light used to reduce inflammation, ease TMJ and muscle pain, and support cell recovery after a procedure, without heat or pain.

Procedures

  • Safe amalgam removal — strict isolation, suction and filtration protocols for taking out old silver fillings while limiting exposure to mercury vapour.
  • Cavitation therapy — treatment of chronic areas of infection that can persist in the jawbone at old extraction sites, commonly wisdom teeth.
  • Root canal alternatives — alternative pulp therapies and evaluation aimed at avoiding a conventional root canal where that is clinically possible.
  • Airway and sleep screening — assessment of jaw and airway structure to identify contributors to snoring, mouth breathing and sleep apnoea.
  • Heavy metal detoxification — working alongside medical doctors to support clearance of residual metals after old fillings are removed.
